In 2009 this actually happened, for real! A South African company sent two 4GB data packages from Pietermaritzburg to Durban: one over ADSL, the other via memory stick carried by a homing pigeon named Winston. Data transfer by pigeon took about 2 hours, at which point the ADSL transfer was 4% complete.
